Tampa Tribune - Pasco Edition Article

NEW PORT RICHEY - Joe Fairweather foresees a fleet of moving trucks and a prime location on U.S. 19.

While his vision to expand A Father & Son Moving Co. may be a few years from fruition, Fairweather says his father and business co-owner, Brian Fairweather, taught him through words and by example.

"No matter what, whatever you're doing, do your best," Brian Fairweather of Queens, N.Y., still says today. "That's the only route to go."

With his dad helping out, though often from afar, Joe Fairweather doesn't see how their business could fail.

The father-and-son duo started the company several months ago. Joe Fairweather said he learned the moving-company ropes at A Big Boys Moving Co. in Palm Harbor, where he worked for a few years before starting the new business, headquartered off Trouble Creek Road in New Port Richey.

The company handles house, apartment and commercial moves in Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. They specialize in handling antiques and baby grand pianos.

The company employs three movers, and Joe Fairweather's fiancee Stacey Ott works in the office, coordinating jobs. Until the company grows enough to hire more workers, Joe Fairweather said he will do much of the moving himself.

He smiled at the thought.

"My dad has been a hard worker his whole life," Joe Fairweather said. "He used to own a bowling pro shop. He was a pro bowler for a while, then opened his own pro shop. He's an all-or-nothing guy, a perfectionist. He was pretty strict and always made sure I did my best, no matter what it was - sports, anything."

"He's also very business-savvy," Ott said of her future father-in-law.

Brian Fairweather lives in New York, where he owns a Tropicana sales route. His son said the elder Fairweather "keeps away" from day-to-day operations issues in New Port Richey as much as possible.

"He lives up there," Joe Fairweather said, "but he visits here a lot."

He said business has been brisk since the company established a website, and he hopes to expand rapidly. The business has two 28-foot trucks, but he wants to buy a new one every year.

"We want to get a fleet of trucks and frontage on U.S. 19," Joe Fairweather said. "We want to be franchiseable in five years."

While Joe Fairweather builds the business, he is also starting a family. He and Ott, who plan to marry in August, have a 9-month-old daughter named Kaylee. The family plans to celebrate Father's Day next weekend, when Joe Fairweather's brother, Anthony, 28, a nuclear engineer with the U.S. Navy, gets married in Norfolk, Va.

"I think he'll do well" as a father, Brian Fairweather said of his youngest son. "He and Stacey will do just fine. I think it's great - it's a big part of life to have children. I feel sorry for people who haven't had that experience."
